Blob Opera
Blob Opera
What Is Blob Opera?
Blob Opera is an online playful, experimental music game created by David Li. Instead of playing the game through the use of the classic tools or a complex musical instrument, the game allows you to compose operatic melodies by controlling four colorful jelly-like blobs. Each blob shows a different vocal range, and together they sing in real time.
What makes Blob Opera special is that it uses machine learning trained on real opera voices. The system learned from hours of recordings by professional singers, allowing anyone no matter their musical background to experiment with rich, expressive opera sounds.
How to Play Blob Opera
Getting started is refreshingly simple. You don’t need to know how to sing or read music.
- Drag blobs up and down to change pitch
- Move them left or right to adjust vowel sounds
- The blobs automatically harmonize with each other in real time
Once you’re happy with your creation, you can press the Record button and share your opera performance with friends. There’s also a fun visual toggle that adds a festive theme to your composition.
How the Music Works
Blob Opera utilizes a machine learning model that has been trained on the voices of four opera singers: tenor, bass, mezzo-soprano and soprano. You are not hearing their voices, but the model-idea of how to sing opera. Another intelligent system helps the blobs respond to your movements and stay harmonically balanced, even when you experiment wildly.
